to Speed Up Your Internet Connection

To Speed Up Your Internet Connection

image
These days, with broadband Internet becoming as common as snow, most of us find ourselves blessed with blissful, high speed connections to the online realms. All seems to be going just great; the downloads are fast, browsing is so fast that there is virtually no stoppages, and the online games are completely lag-free. However, things tend to go wrong sometimes. We find our net speeds slower than a sloth. Gaming seems impossible online, downloads seem to take forever to complete, and the general broadband experience leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
Why is my Internet so slow?
There are several factors that can affect your Internet connection negatively. The most common problems include:
Bad Service from Provider:  Believe it or not, Internet speeds tend to vary based on geographic locations. So someone in say, Bristol, may enjoy great speeds from one service provider, while another person using services from the same provider in Manchester, may have a disappointing experience.
Old Operating System and Software: Newer software bring with them updates, enhancements and new features that can drastically improve browsing experience.
Computer Infections: Viruses, malware, and undesirable applications can infect the computer, and slow it down over time.
Old Hardware: Using outdated hardware such as old network peripherals, older cabling, etc. can also reduce speeds considerably.
Security Leaks: This pertains to Wi-Fi (Wireless) users. Your Wi-Fi network, if left unsecured, may easily be hacked into. People close-by, neighbours, etc. could piggyback on your Internet connection, reducing your own speeds.
How do I get my net speeds back to normal?
There are some really simple steps that you could take to find the reason for your slow network speeds, solve the issues, and stop them from reoccurring:
  • Do a Speed Test
: Determine what speeds you are currently getting, by running a simple online speed test.Run the speed test from different machines that have been tested to be clean and infection-free, if possible. If you get low speeds no matter which system you use, the problem may lie with your Internet provider.
  • Check whether your Wi-Fi Network is secure: Wireless connections are pretty open to risks. If you use a wireless router, you can go to the router’s admin page where you can find a list of the systems connected to your network. You can also set up encryption and a password that prevents unauthorised access to your network. The admin page can be accessed by opening a Web browser and typing the IP address of the router into the address bar. By default, the IP address of modems, routers and the like, tend to be “192.168.1.1″, or “192.168.2.1″. Refer to the router/ modem manual booklets for more details.
  • Check for Improper positioning in case of Wireless Connections: While Wi-Fi is a good choice as its a cable free connection, it can be bogged down by interference from other wireless devices in the area, or by walls and other heave objects coming in the way. Position the computer as close to the router as possible, to ensure maximum bandwidth. If there is a lot of distance between the router and the systems, investing in a parabolic reflector, or a high-gain antenna for the router can help boost the transmission speeds.
  • Check for damaged/ old cables: Damaged cables can cause intermittent connectivity issues, frequent disconnections and several other undesirable effects. Check the network cabling behind your computer for signs of wear and tear. Replace the cables if found to be frayed, torn or damaged in some other way.
  • Update your Operating System & Software: Using an old operating system can increase chances of infection, and not updating regularly used software can open the system to vulnerabilities. Both of these issues can slow down the network speeds drastically. Updating them will help you stay secure online.
  • Install and regularly maintain an Antivirus Solution: Keeping antivirus software installed and frequently updated can go a long way in improving the health of the system, and can also help keep your network safe by using a firewall. A safe and secure network often tends to be less effected by worms, Trojans, etc. This can in turn keep the net speeds healthy.
  • Run Diagnostic Tools: If the net speeds are quite low and the hardware isn’t at fault, then running diagnostic software tools can help determine the problem. Tools such as malware scanners, junk file removers, registry cleaners and so on, can help clean the system and thereby improve the net speeds.
Just taking some simple steps and preventive measures can go a long way in reducing speed bumps on your broadband superhighway.

Location-based Alerts on your Android

Setting location based reminders is very  simple in android. The app is integrated with Google Maps and you can just tap a location on the map to set a reminder when you are around that place.
You can  create one-time alerts or  configure it to repeat on particular days

How do you locate your mobile phone if the ringer is off? Maybe you switched the phone to vibrate mode while you were in a meeting and now you dont find it .
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could use other  phone  to turn on the ringer of your missing phone?
Here is an app for it
Agastya, a new Android app that lets you “remotely” perform various tasks on your phone from any other phone via simple SMS commands. The other phone, that is sending the commands, need not be running Android – even the basic Nokia phone would do

The workflow is very  easy. You send an SMS command from a friend’s phone to your own phone in a given format and the app reacts accordingly.
For example, a command like “ringer” would turn on the ringer while “silent” would put the phone to silent mode.
The best feature of this app is it  helps you retrieve your missed calls list or your incoming text messages via, you got it right, SMS.
Here’s a complete list of SMS commands that you can try on your Android phone:
  • SILENT – Turn off the phone’s ringer
  • RINGER – Turn on the ringer
  • IMEI – Get the IMEI number* of your phone
  • LAST MESSAGES – Retrieve the last 5 text messages received on your phone
  • LAST CALLS – Know the last 5 missed/received/dialed numbers
  • <CONTACT> – Fetch the contact number of a person from the address book.

Agastay isn’t the first app that offers such features.
The more popular Where’s My Droid app can not only turn on the ringer of your phone remotely but will also send you the phone’s current GPS location by SMS. There’s overlap but these apps are more inclined towards locating your lost phone while Agastay is like a command console – you can toggle between phone states or even fetch details of a contact remotely from the phone’s address book. The IMEI feature is also handy for blacklisting your misplaced phone

Kill Crashed Applications

Part 1: This registry tweak allows Windows to find and kill a crashed application faster. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Control Panel\ Desktop and add or edit the string HungAppTimeout to a Value of your choice between 1000-5000 for optimum results. Default setting is 5000 milliseconds.
Part 2: This tweak allows Windows to automatically kill the crashed or hung application without you having to wait. In the same path as part 1, find or create the key AutoEndTasks and set the value to 1.
Part 3: This tweak allows you to still auto close the application is it has crashed, but allows the application some time to ’fix’ itself, for instance, when loading. Again, found in the same directory, find or create the value called WaitToKillAppTimeout, and enter a value in milliseconds.

HIDE DATA IN MOBILE WITHOUT ANY SOFTWARE

Have you ever wanted to hide folders in your phone? If yes, there here is very interesting solution for you to hide folders in your phone and youdont even need any software for that.
This trick can be used for any JAVA phone from Nokia,Samsung,Motorola,LG or any other company.
JUST FOLLOW SIMPLE STEPS
  1. Create any new folder or you can use any existing folder that is to be hidden.
  2. Rename the folder to any name but with the extension of .jad like if I want to hide my images folder then I will name it as IMG.jad
  3. Now create a new folder with the same name in the same directory but with the extension of .jar So, I would create the folder with the name IMG.jar
  4. And thats it!! My orignal images folder which has been renamed with .jad gets hidden and only folder with.jar extension is visible which is empty. So,my data is protected/hidden from unwanted eyes.

To unhide the orignal folder you have to remove the .jar extension from the new folder and your orignal folder with all the files and with .jad will become visible.

Iphone serial number

Serial number provides some interesting information about your iPhone, like the week it was manufactured, the factory id and much more.

The first step is to locate the Serial Number. The easiest way to find it is to open your Settings app and navigate to General -> About -> Serial Number. You should also see the Serial Number in the Summary tab in iTunes when your iPhone is connected to the computer.

Serial numbers come in the form AABCCDDDEEF

where

> AA = Factory and machine ID
> B = Year manufactured (simplified to final digit, 2010 is 0, 2011 is 1, etc)
> CC = Week of production
> DDD = Unique identifier
> EEF = iPhone model, color of device and size of storage

VR0 (iPhone 2G Silver 4GB) WH8 (iPhone 2G Silver 8GB) 0KH (iPhone 2G Silver 16GB) Y7H (iPhone 3G Black 8GB) Y7K (iPhone 3G Black 16GB) 3NP (iPhone 3GS Black 16GB) 3NR (iPhone 3GS Black 32GB) 3NQ (iPhone 3Gs White 16GB) 3NS (iPhone 3Gs White 32GB) A4S (iPhone 4 Black 16GB) A4T (iPhone 4 Black 32GB)

E00 (iPhone 4 White 32GB) - Courtesy IyonUK

For example, the serial 79028XXXA4S is from factory 79 (presumably Foxconn), was manufactured in 2010 in the 28 week, and is a black 16GB iPhone 4.

Unfortunately, Apple has changed the serial number generation with the CDMA iPhone 4, so this is not applicable for the CDMA iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

How to create a text file

Open and use Notepad
Tip: A text file is considered a plaintext file and Notepad is only capable of creating and editing plaintext files and saves any text file with a .txt file extension. This means no special formatting or different types of fonts can be used.
The easiest way to create a text file in Windows is to open up the Notepad software program on your computer. This is a standard program in Microsoft Windows, included with the operating system when installed.
The Windows Notepad program can be found by following either of the below steps.
  1. Click Start
  2. In the Run or Search box type Notepad and press enter.
Or
  1. Click Start
  2. Open All Programs, Accessories and then click Notepad.
Save the file as a text file
You can also create a text file using any other word processing software program, like Microsoft Word or Wordpad. When saving the file, change the file name or file type to Plain Text to save it as a text file. In many of these programs, you'll also have the option to save the file as a Rich-Text Format.
Save As option
After the file has been created and saved it can also be edited using Notepad or another word processing software program.
Create a new text document from the Desktop
Another way to create a text file is to right-click on your Desktop screen and in the menu that appears, click New and then click Text Document.
This will open your default text editor with a blank text file on your Desktop. You can change the name of the file to anything you want. You can edit the file in the Notepad program or any other word processing software program, like Microsoft Word.
Create a text file from the command line
While in the Windows command line you also have the ability to create a new text file in the current directory. With earlier versions of Windows, a new file of any type including text files could be created by using the edit command line command. Later versions of Windows removed this feature, so our current recommendation for creating a text file from the command line is by using the start command as shown in the below example.
start notepad myfile.txt
In the above example, you are using the start command to open notepad with the file "myfile.txt", assuming this file does not exist it would be created and saved in your current directory. If the file did exist, you would be editing that file.
Create a text file from in a Linux shell
There are several commands that can be used to create a text file in a Linux shell. The easiest command to create, view, and edit a text file or plaintext file is the pico command. To use this command, enter the below command at the prompt.
pico myfile.txt
After entering the above command, the editor will be opened and allow you to create a text file. When done, press Ctrl + X to exit the file, when prompted to save the file if you wish to keep the file press "Y" for yes.
Tip: the .txt file extension is not required in Linux, it is an extension most commonly found and used with Windows. If you do not need the file to easily opened in Windows, you can have no file extension or rename it to whatever you want.

What is the difference between ROM and RAM?

What is the difference between ROM and RAM?

Answer

There is one major difference between a ROM chip and a RAM chip.
A ROM chip does not require a constant source of power to retain the information stored on it, whereas a RAM chip does require a constant source of power to retain the information. When a computer is turned on, and programs are being run, the programs information is stored in the RAM chip for better efficiency and speed. However, as soon as the computer is turned off any information stored in the RAM chip is lost. With a ROM chip, any information stored on the chip remains on it with or without power.
ROM chips are commonly used in gaming system cartridges, like the original Nintendo, Gameboy, Sega Genesis, and a number of others. The game cartridge stores the game programming on a ROM chip which is read by the game console when the cartridge is inserted into the console.
AMIBIOS BIOSROM chips can also be found in computers, to store the programming needed to begin the initial boot up process when turning on a computer. Using non-volatile storage is the only way to begin the start up process for computers and other devices that use similar a start up process. The most common type of programmable ROM (PROM) chip in a computer is the BIOS.
RAM chips are also used in computers, as well as other devices, to store information of the programs currently running on the computer. However, only volatile information can be stored on RAM chips, due to that fact that if power is lost to the computer all information stored in the RAM is lost.
The oldest ROM-type storage media can be dated back to 1932 with drum memory. Today, ROM-type storage media is still used and continues to be improved upon for better performance and storage capacity.

Short for Microsoft Disk operating system, MS-DOS is a non-graphical command line operating system created for IBM compatible computers that was first introduced by Microsoft in August 1981 and was last updated in 1994 when MS-DOS 6.22 was released. Although the MS-DOS operating system is not commonly used today, the command shell more commonly known as the Windows command line is still used and recommended. Continue reading >>

Islam

Medallion showing 'Allah' in Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey.
According to Islamic belief, Allah is the proper name of God,[27] and humble submission to His Will, Divine Ordinances and Commandments is the pivot of the Muslim faith.[5] "He is the only God, creator of the universe, and the judge of humankind."[5][6] "He is unique (wāḥid) and inherently one (ʾaḥad), all-merciful and omnipotent."[5] The Qur'an declares "the reality of Allah, His inaccessible mystery, His various names, and His actions on behalf of His creatures."[5]
Allah script outside Eski Cami (The Old Mosque) in Edirne, Turkey.
In Islamic tradition, there are 99 Names of God (al-ʾasmāʾ al-ḥusnā lit. meaning: "The best names") each of which evoke a distinct characteristic of Allah.[6][28] All these names refer to Allah, the supreme and all-comprehensive divine name.[13] Among the 99 names of God, the most famous and most frequent of these names are "the Merciful" (ar-raḥmān) and "the Compassionate" (al-raḥīm).[6][28]
Most Muslims use the untranslated Arabic phrase ʾinšāʾ Allāh (meaning "God willing") after references to future events.[29] Muslim discursive piety encourages beginning things with the invocation of bismi-llāh (meaning "In the name of God").[30]
There are certain phrases in praise of God that are favored by Muslims, including "Subhan-Allah" (Holiness be to God), "Alhamdulillah" (Praise be to God), lā ʾilāha ʾilla-llāh (There is no deity but God) and "Allāhu Akbar" (God is great) as a devotional exercise of remembering God (zikr).[31] In a Sufi practice known as zikr Allah (lit. remembrance of God), the Sufi repeats and contemplates on the name Allah or other divine names while controlling his or her breath.[32]
Some scholars[who?] have suggested that Muhammad used the term Allah in addressing both pagan Arabs and Jews or Christians in order to establish a common ground for the understanding of the name for God, a claim Gerhard Böwering says is doubtful.[27] According to Böwering, in contrast with pre-Islamic Arabian polytheism, God in Islam does not have associates and companions nor is there any kinship between God and jinn.[27] Pre-Islamic pagan Arabs believed in a blind, powerful, inexorable and insensible fate over which man had no control. This was replaced with the Islamic notion of a powerful but provident and merciful God.[33]
According to Francis Edwards Peters, "The Qur'an insists, Muslims believe, and historians affirm that Muhammad and his followers worship the same God as the Jews (29:46). The Koran's Allah is the same Creator God who covenanted with Abraham". Peters states that the Qur'an portrays Allah as both more powerful and more remote than Yahweh, and as a universal deity, unlike Yahweh who closely follows Israelites.[15]
